The Indiana Heart Institute (IHI) was the first medical center in Indiana, and one of the first worldwide, to offer MIDCAB.

Mid-CABG Surgery being performed at St.Vincent Hospital
MID
CABG CorVasc MD's was the first
cardiovascular surgical team in Indiana, and one of the first
worldwide, to offer Minimally Invasive Direct Coronary Artery Bypass
Graft Surgery. Drs. Robert Robison, David Heimansohn, Edward
Fitzgerald and Keith B. Allen are performing this procedure on
select patients at St.Vincent Hospital, Indianapolis, IN.
Patients suitable for this
procedure usually fall into one of two categories:
- Patients who have a blockage in
one or two coronary arteries located on the front side of the
heart but are considered too high risk for conventional bypass
surgery or balloon angioplasty.
- Patients who are otherwise
healthy, but have a blockage in one to two coronary arteries
located on the front side of the heart.
How Minimally Invasive Direct
Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery (MIDCAB) is Performed:
Conventional bypass surgery requires
the surgeon to divide the breastbone and stop the patient's heart. A
cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) machine is then used to pump blood
through the body while the lengthy surgery is performed.
With MIDCAB, the procedure is
performed while the patient's heart is still beating. A three-inch
incision is made below the left breast. The blocked coronary
artery(s) is bypassed using the internal mammary artery, which runs
along the chest wall. Specialized instruments allow the surgeon to
attach the artery below the blocked area, restoring a fresh blood
supply to the heart.
MIDCAB Benefits are Wide Ranging.
- The procedure is performed in only two to three hours, compared to the traditional bypass that can take three to six hours.
- The recovery time is dramatically
reduced from months, to days or weeks.
- By avoiding the use of the CPB
machine, complications are reduced.
- There is a reduced need for blood transfusions, if any.
- Due to less time under anesthesia, patients are moved out of intensive care more quickly.
- There is less pain and discomfort.
- The incision is cosmetically more acceptable.
- There is an estimated saving of
up to 40% of the cost of traditional coronary artery bypass
surgery.
MIDCAB has shown a 90% effectiveness
rate in worldwide studies and has provided substantial relief to
approximately 95% of all patients undergoing the procedure.
MIDCAB offers new hope and
opportunities for patients who are not eligible for traditional open
heart surgery or angioplasty.
