Transmyocardial Laser Revascularization

Transmyocardial Laser Revascularization is an alternative method for restoring blood supply to the heart in those patients who do not experience relief of angina symptoms with conventional medical therapy or are no longer candidates for coronary bypass surgery or angioplasty. Examples include patients with previous bypass surgeries, multiple angioplasties, or end stage renal or diabetic disease resulting in severe coronary artery disease.

During TMR procedures, small holes are created in the damaged portion of the heart muscle wall. It is thought that these channels will allow oxygen-rich blood to flow from the inside of the heart into the oxygen-starved heart muscle wall. By improving the blood flow to that region, the chest pain symptoms may be relieved. Clinical studies suggest that at six months after TMR, 87% of patients show an improvement in their angina status.
